Take a day trip to the Lupa Zoo.
Where and Who?
The family-friendly Lupa Zoo is located in a suburban neighborhood in the town of Ludlow, MA, near the city of Springfield, Massachusetts. Roughly 20 minutes from downtown Springfield, the zoo is an ideal day trip location.
The Zoo was created by Henry and Joan Lupa. They originally had a farm with a small collection of animals, but their vision grew, and they opened the Lupa Game Farm in 1996. In 2002, they received their official license from the USDA.
Playgrounds and activities
Over the past few years, the zoo has invested heavily in remodeling, expanding, or adding playgrounds and activity zones for the kids. It is clear that families are the main draw of the zoo.
What else?
They also have a pavilion and a room which you can reserve for birthday parties. I remember having a party here for my eldest child.
An on-site Gift Shop, an Arcade, a theater for animal shows, and a fictitious Prison for kids to take photos in.
For a small fee, you can acquire some food to give to the deer on-site, and there’s plenty of deer here.
What’s on Exhibit?
Some of the animals on display here are the American Bison, Zebras, Deer, Monkeys, Peacocks, Parrots, Onyx, Himalayan Bears, and Ostriches, to name a few. There are plenty more, of course. It’s quite the collection for such a small operation.
The Lupa Zoo, in its present form, has grown drastically over the years, and from the looks of it, it’s expanding beyond its current grounds.
What you won’t find here are some of the larger, far more difficult animals to maintain—animals like Lions, Elephants, and Hippos, for example. But, for a family-friendly zoo, especially with small children, this inexpensive zoo is a great place to hang out. And an overall fun place to visit.
My thoughts
As I mentioned, this is a great zoo for families of all sizes, but those of you with small children will benefit the most, as the zoo is well tailored to children under 12; I’m not saying older kids won’t like it.
I brought my daughter here, the youngest child in the household, and she had a blast. My spouse and I had a great time ourselves. As it stands, I look forward to the ongoing expansions and the zoo’s long-running success, which is why I felt compelled to write this post.
As for the zoo itself, I give my best wishes to the Zoo and its staff.
