Check out the Hana Lava Tube, Maui’s largest Cave.

Did you know that you can visit a Lava Tube in Maui? When most people take the road to Hana, they usually prioritize nature hikes, waterfalls, and the black sand beach. Hana Lava Tube is one of the best stops to make along the road.

It is easy to miss, though. Only 1 mile before you get to Waiʻānapanapa State Park, and near Hana town center. Located near the endpoint of the journey is Hana (unless you are heading to Pīpīwai Trail); most folks are tired from their journey. Have a reservation slot they must make to visit the black sand beach or are running low on time. It’s no wonder why many folks miss it.

With some planning, you can easily squeeze in an hour to visit the tube. I am so glad I was able to visit because I did just that: I was able to enjoy what the tube had to offer. This hidden gem was one of my favorite spots in Maui.

What is a Lava Tube?

A lava tube is a natural path formed underground by flowing lava. Once the lava leaves the tube or dries up creates a cave. Keeping it simple, it’s a cave created by lava.

The Hana Lava Tube allows you to experience the result of an ancient lava flow. Cool, right? This tube, in particular, is the largest on Maui.

The Grounds

Even though the tube is inside private property, the owner provides everything you need to know while exploring the grounds. The grounds themselves are decently large. There is an entrance that every visitor must go through for admission.

Outside the need-to-know stuff, you are provided with a flashlight to take with you for the self-guided tour inside the tube. The cave is dark, and without one, you won’t be able to see a thing.

Although the cave is the main attraction, there is also an outdoor maze made out of plants. And let’s not forget the picnic tables and portable toilets in the parking lot.

Next, you’ll see some photos from our experience inside the Hana lava tube.

Final thoughts

At the end of the walkway stands a sealed section of the cave. The land that part of the cave is in belongs to the state, so you cannot go beyond this point. Nonetheless, what you see and visit is big enough to satisfy. According to the informational displays inside the cavern, there is still a lot more to explore, and the cave itself hasn’t been fully discovered.

I highly suggest you visit the Hana Lava Tube whenever you are in Maui. It is a geological wonder, a reminder of how small we are next to Mother Nature.
